At the same time, the amount of oil we are using in our vehicles, homes and businessescontinued to decline last year, down 14 percent from a peak in 2005. Surprisingly, oil usewas lower in 2012 than in 1973 (when the nation’s economy was only about a third of its current size). The main reason is that we are demanding better mileage from our vehicles and driving them less.
